Q: what is the reliability of a bmw m3?
im going to be joining the marines in about 7 months and have started looking at cars for when i get out of bootcamp. ive seen some really nice looking 02 and 03 bmw m3’s with about 80k+ miles on them for around 20 grand. i just wanted to know if anyone knows how reliable these cars are and if its a recommended buy. thanks

A: I have a 2003.5 E46 M3 and love it. The E46 is 2001-2006 BTW, someone above was off by a year on each end. It’s basically a race car in street clothes, and nothing in the price range can really touch it in terms of performance. Be sure to have a PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection ~$150) done at a dealer before you buy, and make sure the rod bearing recall was done. Be aware that they are not cheap to maintain when making your buying decision, and try to find out as much as you can about the maintenance history of the car. If it was serviced by a dealer, they can show you what has been done. Try to find one that has recently had Inspection 1 or 2 done, including a valve adjustment.

As far as price goes, $20k for an 02 or 03 with 80k on the clock is a bit high. I paid $24,500 for mine and it had just under 40k on it, and that was a year ago. The only distinction of the 2003.5 build date is that’s when the LED tail lights came out, which some think is a big deal. The engine is the same for all E46 M3’s, apart from newer ones that got the rod bearing upgrade at the factory.

I’m on a few M3 forums, and there are lots of E46’s with well over 100,000 miles on them. Properly maintained, I think a motor like this can easily get to 250k. Hope that helps.

Q: How can I convince my Dad to get the new BMW M3 Convertible?
From what I’ve seen its an absolutely beautiful car. The new double clutch transmission is just stunning.

I typically have a large influence on what car my Dad gets, and I feel that this is definitely the car for him (price range is $80,000- $100,000). Do you agree? If not, what car should I take a look at? If so, what are some good selling points I can tell him?

A: If you are looking at M3 price range, I assume max $ spending is pretty flexible for you… so I’m sure your dad’s also think of AUDI RS, and Merc AMG. The BIGGEST selling point for BMW is that BMW M retains its value higher than Audi’s RS or Merc’s AMG. I currently have BMW M6 (2008), Mercedes SL55 AMG (2008), AUDI S8 (2009), and AUDI R8 (2009), and honestly, BMW is holding up its value the most… so this would DEFINITELY be a good selling point for anyone.
PLUS, BMW gets 4 yr or 50K full 5K mileage checkup as well as most covered warranty. This is also a big selling point. For a typical AMG or (R)S will cost you well over 1500 for check ups. So that’s also money saving!

Plus, AUDI breaks down quite often… except R8… at least, my R8 hasn’t had any problem so far. My S8 has been going to the dealership every few weeks for a few adjustments and problems.. for 80~100K price range, the only AMG that your dad can get is either E class or CLS class AMG (C class AMG is just not worth the money). The brand new E is coming out this year and it’ll take awhile til AMG model comes out. The new CLS is comming out in about yr or so and that will drop the value of the current CLS models significantly so those aren’t really worth the money. I guess that’s also a good selling point.

Q: What would happen if i drive my bmw m3 to school with no insurance.?
I am 18 so if i drive it too school with no insurance will i get caught.Even if i park in the school car park.

A: If you don’t have insurance on the car, you’re going to find yourself in a heap of trouble if you have an accident.

If you own an M3 and you’re 18, mommy or daddy can get you some insurance. Otherwise, leave it alone.

Q: Do You Get The BMW M3 Back In Need For Speed Carbon?
At The beginning of Need for speed carbon you get chased by cross and total the bmw m3 but what i want to know is do you get to drive the car after that?

A: Actually it is. When you start “Career mode”, it is there in the cut scene.
Also if you unlock the car with a reward card.

Q: Does anybody know the specs on the battery for a 2001 BMW M3?
Also, where would be a good place to get one other than the dealership? Thanks for your time everybody!

A: BMW Part Number 61 21 6 946 333 / 80AH 640A

Retail Price at the dealer is $170

Q: How much do you think 2004 BMW M3 insurance would be for someone who has been driving for 5 clean years?
i live in Massachusetts and am debating between an M3 or a mini cooper… both are extremely fun to drive but i was curious on M3 insurance. Also wouldn’t mind advice on what other people would choose. currently have 12k saved… the mini cooper s will be brand new at 24k and the m3 will be around 34

A: go to geico.com and esurance.com and get some quotes. i think the difference should be around $500/yr

the key thing that will be expensive is maintenance and repairs. the m3 will be more expensive obviously. tires alone will be much more expensive

if you have the cash flow, you can’t go wrong with the m3

Q: What are some good & bad things about owning a BMW M3?
I love the M3, & want to buy one soon but my mom & her friend are trying to talk me out of it they say to insure it cost a lot of money. I plan on getting a 2004-2006 M3 SMG & just wanted to ask people that know more about the M3 what are some good & bad things of owning one.

A: The BMW M cars are pure driver’s cars. It something that you would want to take to a test track or drive fast just for the feeling. The engine growl is something that you can’t find anywhere else short of an Italian exotic. The car does everything very well.
When the M cars are right, there’s nothing like them, but when their messed up, there’s also nothing like them.
They can be hideously expensive to repair. I would bet that you would receive near a 10,000 dollar bill to replace the SMG transmission. A blown engine will be upwards of 15k. A vanos problem or AC unit would be @ 2k or better.
I am not telling you not to buy one, these cars are special. Do your research and find one with a good history, you may also want to look into a warranty.
You also need to join a BMW forum to research common problems and cost of ownership before you make an purchase.

Q: How much would the price of a E92 BMW M3 drop by 2013?
If it has about 30,000 to 75,000 miles what will the price be in 3 years?

A: I wish I could predict the future.

Q: How to get BMW M3 GT2 and Maserati MC12 in Need for Speed Shift?
Read title.

How do you buy/get these cars? I don’t see them in the car lot.

Thanks.

A: The Maserati MC12 is a loaner car. You unlock the BMW M3 GT2 as a reward car after you win the NFS Live World Tour.

You can only access them for quick races!

Q: should i buy a used 2003 BMW M3, used 2007 Lexus IS 350 or a new Infiniti G37?
I’m currently looking for a car that is sporty, has 6 cylinder s(gives around 20 highway mileage), is luxurios, and also has good safety rating. My plan is to hand it down to my son next year when he turns 17. What’s a good choice out of these three or is there any other luxury sports car that meets this criteria.

A: Well since you plan to hand it down i think u should go with the M3 I think its the Best of all these choices and u should enjoy it and your son definitely will.

Q: What can you tell me about removing the electronic governor in a 2005 BMW M3?
I know there are programs out there.

Anyone have good or bad experiences?

A: You would void your BMW warranty.

Take the advice of the other posters and don’t mess with it. If 155 MPH is not good enough for you, there is always the race track.

Q: How much is insurance per year on a E46 BMW M3?
I’m looking into buying a 2002-2004 M3. I’m 18 yo male with a clean driving record.

A: / My ‘guess’ would be around $2,500.00 a year for you…

The reason I am guessing, is because auto insurance cost depends on your credit history first – believe it or not.

Secondly, it’s not your fault that you fit in the category of being a young male, but they are the worst drivers (wreckless speeding, accidents, swerving in and out of traffic, road rage, racing on public roads, etc), so your insurance will be higher than normal simply because of the others who gave your gender and age group a bad driving history.

Third, having a clean driving record at 18 is a big ‘plus’ and if you can stay that way until you are 21, you will be better than most young male drivers, and your insurance will go down considerably at that time.

Lastly, you are asking for insurance on an expensive automobile which will be driven by someone who fits in the category as the worst drivers, so automatically you will be paying the highest rate without having done anything wrong.

The problem with insurance quotes from places like Progressive.com, is that they will quote you a lower rate than they will eventually charge you. You will find that within a month of signing up, they’ll have an excuse to raise your rate without you knowing it. Geico and Progressive have class action lawsuits against them for doing this to new drivers.

Hopefully, if possible, you can get on your parent’s insurance plan at a reasonable rate first.

Q: How much does it cost for a 2009 BMW M3 a month on loan?
The cost for it is $60,575, how much do you pay a month? Me and my brother are trying buy this car together so I just want to get an idea.

A: $1,062.08 for 6 years at 8%. If you two were smart enough to afford that, you would know that most all banking websites have loan calculators, interest rates etc.

Q: Can u play the tv while moving in a bmw m3?
Not for my benefit but of my passengers, is there a way to over-ride the safety feature that turns the tv to a blue screen when the car is moving. Id like to be able to have access to the tv for longer journeys.

A: No, it’s set up that way on purpose. You’re to be driving, keeping your eyes on the road, not watching the screen.

Q: Is it impossible to park in tight spaces in a BMW M3 with the SMG II gearbox?
I need to know, if the answer is yes then i will go for a manual!
BMWSGODS -I do or i wouldnt have asked the question – knob

A: if the road is flat you will not have a problem, if you are trying to parallel park on a hill, have fun! You will stall many, many times even after years of driving the car. You may need to use the emergency brake and keep the revs high to get into the space…it is entertaining to watch but not entertaining if you are the one drivng. Take it for a test drive, find a hill and try to park, then let the sales rep try it.
