Q: How hard is it to swap a 4 cylinder to a 6 on a 1997 Jeep Wrangler? Does everything line up?
I am looking at a 4 cylinder Jeep Wrangler. I do not want to dump too much money in this vehicle. Will everything line up if I went with an in-line 6?
A: At minimum you would need the donor engine, transmission and transfer case, the ECM (Computer), parts of the emissions control system, wiring harness and new motor mounts.
It’s doable, but a lot of work for not a lot return. If you’re seriously considering a swap I would look at a GM v-6 or small block V-8.
Novak has a good write-up on engine swap basics in TJs. Linked below.
Q: Can a tall person still fit comfortably in a jeep wrangler?
im 6ft 4inches and was wondering if i would be able to fit in a jeep wrangler comfortably for long drives?
A: I have a YJ, and Im around 5 “8, its a little crowded with the console, so we removed it. The seats dont go back very far in my jeep. My friends TJ is much more comfortable, softer susp., seats, exct. Yes, there is a jeep for you. Good luck and happy jeeping
Q: How do I find a Leak on my 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport and it seems like I have to fill the coolant reservoir like twice a month but I see no leaks. I checked the motor oil and transmission to see if water is going to those places but they seem fine, tried tightening all the hoses but still leaks. If anyone can help I really appreciated thanks.
A: sounds like head or intake gaskets to me, run compression test and block test. that will tell you whether it is internally leaking or not
Q: How do I attach and remove a soft top for a 1992 Jeep Wrangler.?
My sister lost her manual and I have never done it before. Starting to look like rain around here, need to get it up soon. If you know of a good maitnence wesite for a 1992 Jeep Wrangler, let me know too.
A: well if it is just laid back in the rear of the jeep it is real easy. If you just lift it forward toward the front of the jeep it should come right up. It may have straps holding it in place, but they should be either button straps or velcrow. Undo them and lift it up every thing else should be pretty self explanitory.
Q: What is the stock rim dimensions on a 1991 Jeep Wrangler?
I need to get some stock rims for my 1991 Jeep Wrangler to bring the tires back under it so they are not sticking out to pass inspection but do not know what the stock size rims are? Also is there anything that is the same? I was told ford was but idk for sure?
A: The stock rims were either 15×6 or 15×7 depending on which trim level it came with.
The bolt pattern is 5×4.5″. Yes, some Fords used to use the same bolt pattern – Ranger, Explorer, Bronco II. I’d just find some stock Jeep wheels and tires from another Wrangler (any year from 87-06) or a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee.

Q: What would be the best (and easiest) Motor and Transmission to put in a 1990 Jeep Wrangler?
Bought a ‘90 jeep wrangler with a 4 banger motor and 5th gear is shot. I wanted to replace the whole deal. I want to be able to drive it on the road and off road. Best motor for the Job?
A: Your best bet is to find a donor jeep with a good drive-train. A junk yard will be quite expensive for everything you’ll need. The 4.0L tends to get a little better gas mileage because it is injected. The 4.2L and the 4.0L also have different pilot bearing sizes, you can purchase a new pilot bushing to mate a newer tranny to an older motor, should you decide to use parts from multiple years. Stay away from the BA-10 (Peugeot) transmission found in ‘88 YJs, they are horrible. Early AX-15s, from ‘89-’91 or ‘92, have a weaker reverse gear than ‘93 and newer. If you can find a complete jeep with a bad frame/tub or a wreck than runs, you wont nickel and dime yourself to death. Two summers ago I bought a jeep with a bad motor then bought two more parts jeeps and was able to sell the spare parts and almost completely pay for all three. You may also want to check out a jeep forum, chances are someone near you has something you can use for pretty cheap.
Q: What kinds of problems occur with Jeep wrangler tj’s with high miles?
I am thinking about buying a 2001 jeep wrangler with a 2.5 inch lift, american racing wheels and 33 inch bf goodrich mud-terrains. It is an automatic and has 72000 miles on it, and is $7500 . Is it worth it?
A: You can definitely shift on the fly. Good vehicle, great motor, moderate lift is a good thing, etc.
The only concern I would have is the auto tranny. They didn’t put very good autos in TJs. If it doesn’t shift well, pass on it. Or offer less and swap a standard in later on!! If it doesn’t already have a tranny cooler, the tranny is probably ready to go. You need a big tranny cooler with an automatic and big tires!
Q: What should i know about a Jeep Wrangler before I buy?
I have wanted a Wrangler FOREVER they are just great looking and fit my personality. But I don’t know tons about them. I grew up in the city and dont know all about 4-wheeling or anything. So i’m asking for help on what to look for when buying my jeep.
A: like all cars, some years are better than others, personally, jeeps do not have a good repair record, they are not dependable and are well known for electrical gremlins and engine and tranny problems (and sorry, not trying to bust the bubble on your dream!!! I am trying to be as honest as I can.
On any used car, I suggest doing a test drive when the vehicle is cold after sitting at least overnight. Start it up, it should start easily, and not make any rattling or loud knocking or banging sounds, and no large puffs of smoke. It should smooth into a high idle after 5 to 10 seconds, give it a minute or two to warm up, (mainly for oil circulation) then drive it like you stole it, If should run, drive and stop good when cold, any vehicle that can get up to freeway speed (55 mph) in the first 5 to 10 minutes may not be in too bad of shape. Plan on an extended test drive, at least 30 to 40 minutes, if it has any problems, or a dealer just reset some check engine lights without fixing the problems, a 30 or 40 minute test drive should give you a good idea of vehicle condition. Do not take a dealer or anyone Else’s word for condition of the vehicle, If you are going to spend 10s of thousands of dollars, then please, be patient, don’t buy some bodies broken problem. A mechanic charges 70 bucks an hour, and my mechanic can check out a vehicle very good in an hours time, and if he oks the vehicle but finds minor problems (and all used vehicles have some, I budget 200to 600 bucks) get a written estimate for repair costs. if the vehicle needs 400 bucks in repairs, I try to get 200 dollars off the final price. In the end, buying a used car, is all about patience. And dealers routinely overprice cars, so check prices, I like to use www.nada.com all it is is a free consumer price guides, and you can look at thousands of newspaper auto sales want ads online for free, so check what that year make and model is selling for in a big newspaper in a big city nearby, of look on craigslist, the idea being get a rough idea of what something is worth, instead of paying too much first, and then looking.
Many people hurry up, buy a vehicle, it breaks down the next day, AND THEN THEY GO TO THE SHOP. bad plan, go to the shop first, get a good inspection, then go from there, I check with my mechanic ahead of time, to see if his day is easy, so he may have time to give me an hour to do a quick inspection. hope you find your dream jeep, best of luck
Q: Is it possible to make a Jeep Wrangler safe?
I’m a teen driver and my mom is insisting that I get a safe car. I fell in love with the Jeep Wrangler but she needs proof that it has enough safety features. I have researched a bit and found that you can get optional side airbags but I haven’t been able to find out if that really improves the overall safety of the car. If you know ANY details about this awesome car’s safety, I’d be thrilled if you shared!
A: Not to many safety features but one thing people don’t realize is that the jeep is basically made of layers of steel, if you get a hard top and leave the doors on it’s a extremely safe car. (aside from rolling)
Q: How many liters does a Jeep Wrangler Hold?
We have a 2004 Jeep wrangler and are currently living in Germany which uses liters and some German friends asked how many liters of gas goes into the Jeep….also if you know the average of kilometers it gets that would be awesome too
) Thanks!
A: 19 gallons converts to 71.9 liters. 18-21 MPG. (18 miles = 28.9 km.)
See links for info about your Wrangler.
Q: Which jeep wrangler unlimited is better?
I’m considering getting a jeep wrangler unlimited sahara or rubicon. Which is better? I need to be able to drive on the highway, but also on gravel and off-roading.
I know I need 4×4, and I want the 6- speed manual transmission.
A: The first thing you have to do is determine how much and how tough of off roading you will be doing. The Sahara is very capable for most applications.
The Rubicon, as stated previously, is a little more heavy duty. Items such as: stronger front axle, electronic sway bar disconnect, axle lockers, and a strong transfer case.
Do a lot of research:

www.jkowners.com
Check out local 4×4 forums, as they will have the most pertinent information on you location (don’t set up for rocks if you live next to sand dunes).
Enjoy! Once you have the Jeep bug you won’t go back.
Q: What should i do to make my Jeep Wrangler ‘02 4.0L sound louder and more powerful?
What should i do to make my Jeep Wrangler ‘02 4.0L sound louder and more powerful? I wanna put dual exhuast and glass packs on it but does anyone have any recommendations to make it sound really good?
A: Well first off, dont put a glass pack on. They may be loud, but the also sound like sh**. Try magnaflow or flowmaster. I would also recommend putting new exhaust headers on and a x-pipe. They will change the tone of the exhaust and give it that growling sound. Changing your intake will change the sound of the jeep as well.
Q: Need a heavy duty clutch for my Jeep Wrangler?
I have a Jeep Wrangler 1993 YJ 4-Cylinder and am looking to order a new clutch for it. But i dont want a normal clutch that might give up on me in a year or two. I would like a nice heavy duty one something that will last. Could anyone point me at any really good websites and the brand of clutch i should order. Thank You!
A: I installed a standard replacement clutch in my 1990 back in 1999. I’ve been running it and offroading it hard ever since with no trouble, the replacement has about 70K miles on it now. I wouldn’t bother to get anything special, just a good quality standard duty replacement clutch, say from Car Quest or Napa should hold up just fine.
Q: Is it possible to raise the driver’s seat in a 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
I had a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and the driver’s seat was raised. I bought it used and had no idea how to raise or lower it. So, now i just bought a 2000 Sahara and the seat is lower, probably the way it comes stock. Is it possible to raise and how?
A: You are confusing me.
But all i understood is that i think the answer is with you that it is possible.
or you can remove the seat and fit it all again by welding it.
